SEO (Search Engine Optimization), in a single sentence, is a basic, very boring set of activities that need to be done consistently over a period of time.
That explains SEO and shouldn't really be a problem... its a matter of persistence. However, there are three problems on this sentence for an average webmaster or website owner who is trying to do SEO.
Problem # 1: The very boring activity is link building for the most part. And if you have done this for any length of time, you will know that building links is boring as hell and a MAJOR turn off. This is the reason most people fail at SEO. They just CANNOT bring themselves to do this. A lot just can't do it for a long time. When they start building links, they go on for about an hour at the most and then end up getting distracted and forgetting what they started in the first place. Link building is no one's favorite job.
Problem # 2: As if link building already wasn't boring enough, the other problem is that this stuff needs to be done consistently. If 30 links were built this week, a smiliar pace needs to be kept next week, the week after that and the week after that. It needs to be consistent. Remember, links are supposed to be votes or recommendations. So its not natural that 30 people would recommend a particular site this week and no one would the next week and them all of a sudden, 50 people have been talking about the site again after a month. That is just not how people talk about things they like right? So link building needs to be stable and consistent.
Problem # 3: Search Engine Optimization needs to be done over time. Its not that one can can build a specific number of links each week for 4 or 8 weeks and then stop. That is not how it works. SEO is an ongoing process that one needs to constantly keep working. First, to get those rankings. Then once the ranking is acheived, one wouldn't need to keep foot on the steam all the time but ranking still needs to maintain with some link building. So the bottom line is that one needs to be doing it over a period of time.
SEO isn't really complex, the actual problem is with focus.
